Spotlight on the NRLA

In this issue: who the NRLA are, what they do, and why we recommend joining

Who are the NRLA

The National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) is the UK's largest membership body for private landlords. With over 100,000 members, it represents landlords of all sizes, from those with one property to those managing large portfolios.

The NRLA is the main voice for landlords in government consultations and industry discussions, making sure landlord perspectives are heard when new housing laws are being shaped.

What do they do?

  • Provide up-to-date guidance on landlord responsibilities and changes to housing law.
  • Offer training and courses to improve landlord knowledge, many accredited by local councils.
  • Supply ready-made legal documents (tenancy agreements, Section 8/21 forms, rent increase notices, etc).
  • Run a telephone advice line, staffed by experts to answer landlord questions in plain English.
  • Publish regular updates on new legislation, such as the Renters' Rights Act.
  • Represent landlords in government, lobbying on issues like tax, EPC changes, and eviction reforms.

How to join

Joining is straightforward:

  1. Go to www.nrla.org.uk.
  2. Choose your membership type: Individual (for one landlord) or Joint (for couples or business partners).
  3. Fill in your details and pay the annual fee (currently around £85 for individuals or £115 for joint).
  4. You'll receive a welcome pack, login details, and instant access to the online resources.

Are there any requirements?

  • You must be a UK landlord (own or manage at least one rental property).
  • No minimum number of properties required, even one property qualifies.
  • Membership is voluntary but strongly encouraged, especially for landlords managing HMOs or family lets.

Why is membership beneficial?

Being an NRLA member gives landlords:

  • Peace of mind, knowing you're compliant and supported.
  • Discounts on landlord insurance, tenant referencing, deposit protection schemes, and training.
  • Practical tools, legal forms, checklists, tenancy templates.
  • A support network, forums, regional meetings, webinars.
  • Recognition, membership shows tenants, letting agents, and lenders that you take professionalism seriously.

Why we recommend it

At Arena Property, we're NRLA members ourselves. Their advice line and resources are often our first port of call if a compliance question arises, and their updates help us keep our landlords ahead of the curve.

For landlords across Yorkshire, NRLA membership is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to stay compliant, protect your business, and connect with the wider landlord community.
